You’re In School AGAIN?
I mentioned in my last blog, “Has It Really Been Over 18 Months?”, that in 2019 I began studying to become a yoga teacher and upon graduation in early 2020, I began teaching
Yoga. What I didn’t mention was how much practicing, studying and teaching Yoga has changed my life. For the better.
I suppose I should probably start with my Yoga hOME, Life Moves Yoga, because after I had the “aha moment” that I shared in my previous blog, I immediately began researching studios here in Central Texas. It had been quite some time since I had practiced (probably back in 2014-2015ish when I lived in Northern Virginia) and felt like that was the best next step in determining whether I was going to move forward with actually studying Yoga. Well let’s just say that Life Moves Yoga (LMY) wasn’t named one of the 2018 nicest places in America according to Readers Digest and Good Morning America for nothing! This studio’s energy, warmth and welcoming feeling had me from the moment I stepped inside. You can read more about it here and if you have the opportunity, you should sign up for a class. I promise you will leave so glad that you did! Anyways, do you think it was a coincidence that I quickly discovered that LMY (along with Guiding Wellness Institute) was offering a 200-hour program, focused on teaching therapeutic, trauma sensitive, military culture informed and adaptive yoga and meditation? No way was that a coincidence! I talked it over with Omari and with his support, I signed up for the program. And I can honestly say that things have never been the same since. In the best way possible.
Many people fall in love with Yoga first because of the asana, or the poses. For me, that wasn’t so much the case. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the physical part of yoga but what drew me to wanting more was the feeling…the soul filling desire to be the best person I can be when I’m not on the mat, while living a whole and healthy life. The desire to learn more was so strong and the desire to share it with the world was even stronger.
Throughout the program, I learned so much. So much about myself. My beautiful teachers and fellow students. About life. About the tremendous benefits of practicing yoga. The list goes on. I also learned a bit about Ayurveda – the “science of life”. I kept it in the back of my mind because, if I’m being completely honest, there were times I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it through the program and fulfill all of the requirements while being a wife, mom, business owner, etc. So, I finished the course and immediately started teaching as well as researching what was next. I really wanted to jump into a 300-hour program but the timing just wasn’t right for me specific to the program I want to take.
I found a program through Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) that, upon completion, awards the student a Certificate in Ayurvedic Wellness Practices. It sounded so much in line with everything I am already doing and aspiring to be with my business and within myself. I sat on it for quite some time and eventually decided to sign up for classes beginning the Fall 2020 semester (classes started a few days ago!) and I couldn’t be more excited to continue on this journey.
Some may wonder when I’m going to stop signing up for courses, certificates, etc. My response? Just smile and say something along the lines of, “I’m a life-long learner and have found my calling/passion, which is helping others live a whole and joyful life! When you find something so powerful, it doesn’t feel like you can ever learn enough – and it’s a damn good feeling!”
Soooooo, there you have it! My next exciting adventure which can only help me to continue to help others…and myself! If you’re interested in little snippets here and there about things I learn or read, be sure to follow me on Facebook and/or Instagram @coachjenniferballou. Otherwise, I’ll share updates on occasion as to how things are going, as well as how I’m incorporating what I learn into my coaching practice and yoga teachings. Oh, and if you’d like, and you’re in Central Texas, I’d love to have you come to one of my classes at Life Moves Yoga. You can find my schedule here.
